Site Log

Sometime in 1998 (I think!): Page initially created to demonstrate TerraServer images to friends without them having to delve into the TerraServer site to find one particular image of Innerleithen.

April 26th 1999: Day of the Chernobyl / CIH / SpaceFiller virus! My PCs were OK since I had just installed a new virus checker (www.sophos.co.uk)

April 27th (ish!) 1999: Created another account on FreeServers ( askew.freeservers.com ) for a shorter URL.

April 30th 1999: Discover BraveNet and register for even SHORTER URL (clik.to/gma ) and register site on search engines using www.register-it.com.

May 2nd 1999: Tell more friends about my site. Decide that I'll need to upgrade the site sometime.

May 3rd 1999: Find my website on AltaVista so decide to upgrade it! Change page to have list of links and new email form so people can email me from my site. Decide to keep mirror of this page on both Xoom AND Freeservers. I may as well, as it's free and the search engine points to the Freeservers site.

May 7th 1999: Changed the link colours on the main page, then decided that you couldn't read the links for the background image so I removed it! I'm contemplating removing one of my counters from my site. I'll see how slow it is from home.

September 23rd 1999: MAJOR SITE REBUILD: Mum buys a book on HTML so I decide to overhaul the site with frames.

October 8th-9th 1999: Transfer my database of my Star Trek: Fact Files onto web format (I pasted <BR>'s onto the end of each line!!!).

October 10th 1999: Complete majority of site ready for upload.

October 11th 1999: Back at University. Taking Chemistry 2A, Maths 2Eh, Computer Science 1 and Environmental Chemistry 2h. Discover that my timetables clash between my Chem/EChem labs and my Computer Science Labs. I've been told to speak to my Director of Studies about possibly changing to another subject from CS1.

October 13th 1999: Finally have enough free time to edit and upload this site. I just had a Chemistry lab this morning and I've got until 3.30 to upload it. My mum's giving me a lift home (I'm at Uni just now, free internet use) after her shopping.
I have taken stuff from the old site and put it on the new site, and updated the logs. I removed the Terraserver link to the image of Innerleithen (see my TerraServer Images page for more info) and changed the format of the page to the new format.

October 18th 1999: Drop Coputer Science at university because it was clashing with other subjects on the timetable (either trying to be at two places at the same time or travelling 1.5 miles in 5 minutes!!) so I decide to take Industrial Management instead. It's a change from all of the science subjects, I suppose.

October 19th 1999: Create a new message board on Insidetheweb to be used for visitors of my website for comments and for mum practicing her HTML on messageboards. I also managed to make a mess of the HTML in my second message. Typical!

October 20th 1999: Make another update to Star Trek: Fact Files and include the messageboard address on the main page. Page upload on October 21st 1999

October 29th 1999: Update Star Trek: Fact Files to issue 146. Change colour of links from dodgy pink to yellow - much better! Page upload on October 30th 1999.

November 1st 1999: Add jokes to website. No links to them as yet, and only on Xoom site, not on FreeServers mirror site.

November 3rd 1999: Make links to jokes on an index page. Can't decide how to link FROM each joke back to the site index without using absolute links (which would have to be changed between the different servers) can anybody help? Upload the new pages on Thursday 4th November 1999.

November 13th 1999: Found out how to do relative links back to parent directories. Thanks to those who offered help. Edited each jokes page with links back to the jokes index and to each "next" joke. Major jump in site hits since I posted on the Ladies of Lallybroch Messageboard (I got the address right that time!) that my Mum's on. Someone had trouble accessing the Xoom site but the Mirror site at Freeservers worked. I'll put a link to the Mirror Site on the main page and side frame. I'll probably upload this lot on Monday 15th November 1999.

November 17th 1999: Rename all files with lower case and change all links accordingly.

December 12th 1999: Well it would have to happen wouldn't it?! My master hard drive (1GB 3½ year-old drive C:\) finally died. It decided to corrupt the FAT so all of the filenames had transposed characters (ie, "A" changed to "B" and so on) so I lost all the files on that drive, including Windows, and this website. Luckily, most of my vital data was on my other 4GB drive and I rescued my website from the floppy disk I use to transfer the website to the Uni machines for upload.

December 13th 1999: Order a new 20GB hard drive from Simply Computers for £150 using my mum's PC to order it over the Internet. It should arrive on Wednesday December 15th.

December 14th 1999: Supposed to have a Maths class exam at 9.30 but the bus didn't arrive in Edinburgh until 10.10 because the roads were bad with the heavy snow and ice. End up waiting in the freezing bas station (in Edinburgh) from 10.10 until 12.40 to get a bus home again! Totally wasted day!

December 15th 1999: Take delivery of new 20GB drive and install it. Machine detected it OK after some sweating and discovering that the connection to the motherboard was loose. How the BIOS detects it as an 8.4 GB drive and then treats it as a 20GB drive I don't know!

December 16th 1999: Have Chemistry exam in Edinburgh. I think I've probably failed it. Done more re-installing this afternoon.

December 19th 1999: FINALLY installed most of my old programs back in. I've come up with an idea for before the "next time" a disaster like that happens: copy all the setup programs from the numerous Coverdisks and write them all onto one CD for easy retrieval. It was hellish going through all the CDs looking for all the programs to install.

December 25th 1999: Christmas!!!!!!!! Get new mobile phone (I'll give the number to anyone that requests it by email only), although you can send a short message (less than 160 chars.) to gmaskew@sms.genie.co.uk and I'll receive it immediately on my mobile. Pretty cool eh?! We had a quiet Christmas at my grandad's in Peebles with the family.

January 1st 2000: Well, the Y2K bug never seemed to make as much an impact as was expected. Just some sensors stopped working in some Japanese Nuclear power plants, and some American spy satellites were disabled, Ha ha!

February 3rd 2000: Get Creative WebCam III for my birthday.

February 14th 2000: Valentine's Day. Don't get any valentines cards but send one online (well, three by mistake) to a girl in my Chemistry class (Jennifer K.). See Feb 29th.

February 16th 2000: Get a magazine Coverdisk with Internet Explorer 5.5 (Beta) and install it. Now for some funny reason the Bravenet counter thinks that my machine is running Windows 2000! Fair enough, but in Windows in the Help menu it now says "About Millennium" instead of "About Windows 98". I don't know if it's IE5.5 caused that or if a recent installation of WindowBlinds with a skin called "Windows 3000" has changed it.

February 29th 2000: Tell the girl who I sent the Valentine's card. Turns out she has a boyfriend, or so she says!. Hmmmph! :-( We're still friends, though (aren't we, Jen?). So I'm still single and available (have been for the past 19 years!).

March 1st 2000: Upload my website to a UK based host (Freeola). That's created the option of more addresses (although they all point to the same site). The Xoom and Freeservers sites will remain active a while until I maybe create a redirect page. The Freeola is easier for me because FTP access is quicker and I'm not as likely to get in to trouble if I download/upload tons of data (because they pay 2p per MB of data transferred over the Trans-Atlantic link). The new addresses are www.michaelaskew.deepspace9.co.uk and www.askew.uk8.net. I also have new email addresses although I don't check them as often.

March 13th 2000: Start of Exam week at Uni. 5 exams and I think I've failed 3 of them! Industrial Management was OK and so was the TMSE (well, it was a multiple choice class test) but I think I messed up the EnvChem and Chemistry and maybe Maths as well.

March 14th 2000: Start getting messages from a mystery person using my Messenger. I managed to trace the IP address (130.159.248.36) to Strathclyde University but can't identify the person. I know they went to Peebles High School because they found my website by searching for Innerleithen on Yahoo! and they knew that people call me "Askew". I've emailed two girls I know there (Joanne and Kate) hoping that they might have an idea as to who it is.

March 16th 2000: Upload update to the left-hand side frame with icons. The icons are Borg (from Star Trek) if you were wondering.

March 17th 2000: On holiday at last. I'm off for a month so I intend to do some updating of this website.

April 22nd 2000: Well, I didn't get much of my website done over the holidays! I have, however, added a Friends page. It's still incomplete but I'll add more to it in the future.

April 29th 2000: Update of the Star Trek Fact Files page: Added internal links inside long pages. I also added a note about the possible ending of the Fact Files after Issue 192 (Thanks to Wayne M for the info).

May 1st 2000: Create a pictures page for my website. I've still to reformat the pictures before I put them on. I've scanned in pictures from our High School 1998 Yearbook and I'm trying to decide if I want to put all of the pictures in or not.

May 8th 2000: Add a WML page for WAP users to access the site from a mobile phone. It's just a basic introduction to the site but I may add more to it sometime in the future - if the new 3G protocol doesn't beat me to it!

May 27th 2000: Finished all the lectures for 2nd year of Uni. Got exams in 10 days, then 13 weeks of holidays from June. Finally got back to working on the site again, if I can tear myself away from my new toy, a Palm IIIe palmtop organiser. Just an update this time, removed a link (actually a link I mentinoed but forgot to put the link in!!) from the links page.

June 3rd 2000: Me and mum meet up with 3 womem from the Ladies of Lallybroch Messageboard, AlexandraK, M&M and Carol Anne. M&M was over here from Indiana in the US, and the others are Scottish. We went for a meal in Edinburgh and it was a great laugh. Wonder how long it took for the people at that restaurant to discover the breath-freshener sweet in the bottom of the sugar bowl........!

June 12th 2000: Well, my exams are almost over. My Environmental Chemistry exam was tricky, Maths and the first Chemistry paper were bloody impossible but the second Chemistry paper wasn't quite as bad. At least I'm not the only one that will be resitting Chemistry in September. I was speaking to someone from the Chemistry class (Jennifer K, last time I see her until after the summer - bwaaahh!!!) and she said she's probably failed as well. At least she's got a birthday to look forward to on the 18th.

June 29th 2000: FINALLY get round to adding some pictures to my site, partly because I had a request for the URL of my photo TWICE from someone (Hi Bethany!) because she deleted it the first time!...and partly because I offered to host Emma's (Robin's cousin) photos on my site. Presumably Robin's got them on his site also but there's no harm in backups! I will get some more photos scanned in I promise!! (BTW Thanks for the letter Jen!)

Current Date and Time (This bit looks funny in Netscape!):

The Future: Upload and add more images to my TerraServer Images page (although I can't save any images from the website any more, I still have some on disk).

If you want to be emailed when I next make an update of my site, then email me.

Bye for now!
